I was dreading that this would be a whole "nope, everyone's dead/doomed" kind of ending. I'm relieved that it wasn't; it's ambiguous, but to a degree I can deal with.

But I don't understand the plot point of the tracker. I can see the Institute taking out their chemical monitoring whatsit when preparing Oleta for the Extensive Studies Lab; it's unnecessary. But why then install a tracker? They seem convinced of their security, and they put it in shortly before the triple-drug cocktail and "carpentry" (which cannot be recovered from) ... so what's the tracker even *for*?

I bet S2 will answer that, but now that you mention it it does seem a little odd. Maybe even though they *thought* the person encouraging Oleta to escape was another patient they weren't taking any chances? It sounds like that after the war Hester mentioned that tracking people of interest is a big thing in the Society and on the off chance she did succeed and escape, they'd want to know where she is.

I have a few wild-theories, like maybe in their quest to study violence they might release those who underwent carpentry to see what happens? I don't know. D:
